Thatcher House
Year Built: 1935
Thatcher House was named for Roscoe W. Thatcher, professor of chemistry. Dr. Thatcher was the last president of Massachusetts Agricultural College and the first president of Massachusetts State College, serving 1927 to 1932. He was a great advocate of an expansive curriculum which would give agricultural students a better academic base.
Originally a women's dormitory, Thatcher is now home to the Thatcher Language Program, where students live and learn with students in a foreign language. The building houses 123 residents speaking French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Italian.
Cool Fact: Although many people believe the dorms around the Northeast Quad to be very antique, Thatcher is actually the oldest of them. Thatcher, Lewis (1940), and Johnson (1960) Houses were designed to look older, with Victorian trim and gable rooms.
