Frequently Asked Questions

Lesson One

Daily Jolt?
Yes, that's what it says. You can read, which is an important skill for a college student to have. Bully for you! But yes, Daily, as in 'acted upon every day', and Jolt, as in 'caffeinated cola or abrupt sharp jerky movement.' About sums it up.
What's the point?
The point, dear heart, is that you have a daily resource for whatÕs going on in this hyar bubble. Events, menus, announcements, weather, discussions, jobs, stuff for sale, you name it. Assembled with love by a fellow student with a generous heaping of procrastination and a just a pinch of sass.
Who's in charge here?
Well, that depends. Sometimes we let the ferrets pretend it's all their show. But usually it's one of us monkeys listed at the bottom of the front page of the site. We're students, we have classes and lives and hangovers just like you. You might even know us if you actually get out of your room once in a while. And for the very curious, the people who answer *our* questions when we have them are in sunny Cambridge, Massachusetts.
How do I contact you?
Quickest way: send us an email using our contact page. We'll try to be expedient about getting back to you.
Can I make a suggestion?
I don't know, can you? Heh. Well, you certainly *may*. Most of the Jolt's fantastic features came from the ideas of well-meaning folk like you. So if you've got an idear for how we can make the site more useful, entertaining, or blue, pass it on via the contact page. We'll promise to consider it.
Can I help?
I don't know, can you? Sorry, couldn't resist. Well, the only way for us to figure that out is for you to contact us and tell us what you'd be interested in doing. There are a lot of different pieces that go into a Jolt, so people with an interest in writing, editing, photography, web design, promotion, marketing, programming, finding cool stuff, and making exceptionally bad jokes are always desirable. So if you're one of those types, drop us a note and tell us where you can contribute. If weÕve got space, weÕll let you know!

Nuts & Bolts

How do I get my event/announcement/request/profquote/link/picture/object for sale listed on the site?
That's an easy one. Submit it! In the case of events, announcements, pictures, and professor quotes, there are forms on the site for each one under the "Share/Submit" button at the top of the page. Fill it out, submit it, and we'll take a quick look at it before it goes up on the site. If you've got something to sell, an apartment to list, or a ride to give, just head over to the Marketplace or Rideboard and post away.
How do I fix an error in my event/announcement...etc?
Well, in the case of events and announcements, if you used an email address, you can edit your event by clicking on the link in your approval confirmation email. If you realize you made an error in a professor quote or in a picture caption, best to just email us and let us know.
Where is my event/announcement/... etc? I submitted it!
As mentioned above, some things need approval before they go up on the site. In most cases, that doesn't take long, but depending on our schedules (we've got classes and drama just like you), so sometimes it may be a few hours before we get to approving new submissions. Best way to avoid any problems is submit your events in advance of the date they're occuring. Also, events don't show up on the front page unless they're occuring today. If you entered your email address when submitting your event, you'll get an email telling you when it's been approved.

Advertising

How can I advertise my event/organization/business/ on the site?
Well, for starters, we have small ads called Baby Ads that anyone can set up and pay for online. They're especially good for students and organizations that just need a few days of exposure. See FAQ below. But if you are looking for something a bit more involved or for a longer duration, like banner ads, or advertising on multiple sites, best that you email advertising@dailyjolt.com or just give the Cambridge people a call at 617-661-9600.
What are Baby Ads?
Well, to start, they're little ads. Infant-like. But easier to make than real babies. You can set up a Baby Ad to advertise whatever you want on the Jolt for as little or as long as you want. They're great for events, ticket sales, fundraisers, open meetings, studies, even little Happy Birthday messages for your roomie. Anything that you want a lot of people to know about for a very small amount of money. You can make a Baby ad here.
Where is my Baby Ad? I paid for it!
First things first, go back to the page you expected your ad to be on today (the front page or forum) and reload the site a few times. Each Baby Ad rotates with up to two other ads, so you might have seen one of the other ones on your first load of the site. If you reload a bunch and still don't see it, and are sure that today is the day your ad is supposed to be running, drop us an email to babyads@dailyjolt.com with your confirmation number and a description of your ad. We'll help you ASAP.
How do I fix an error in my Baby Ad?
Email babyads@dailyjolt.com with your confirmation number, a description of your ad, and what you want changed. We'll take care of it right away.

Forums & Registration

Why should I register?
Well, the typical perks apply. Registering gives you access to posting on the Forums, filtering the Forums, ignoring annoying users on the Forums, creating a profile with a spiffy icon, customizing your News Feeds, Event listings, and Menus, and seeing the current temperature in Celsius or Kelvin. But there are other things in the works that will make registration even more worth the fifteen seconds it takes to do it.
Will you give out my email address or spam me all the time?
Nope. Read our Privacy Policy if you donÕt believe us.
Are there, like, official "rules" for the Forums?
Why yes, and thanks for asking. We have this little thing called the Forum Policy. Basically it says, "Don't be a jerk." and "If you're a jerk, we can delete your posts and ban you from the site." But we highly recommend reading it fully so that you understand what constitutes jerky behavior. And you should read our Privacy Policy as well so that you know in what specific cases your forum information can be released to third parties.
How do I report spam or abuse or this guy I really hate?
There's a forum report system in the Forum itself. Just click on the 'report this post' link in the offending message and we'll take a look at it right away. If there is a larger problem involving multiple messages or people, feel free to email us directly at forum@dailyjolt.com. If someone's just disagreeing with you, then we're sorry, but unless they're become a consistent problem for people or violate policy, we're not going to get involved. As your mom used to say about your brother, just ignore him and he'll stop harassing you.
Why did my post get removed?
Well, chances are that it was removed because it was a violation of our Forum Policy and because someone reported it to us. We don't take kindly to spam, harassment, or off-topic, threatening, or abusive messages. Other general no-nos are personal attacks on fellow students, staff, or faculty members, inciting or proposing violence against individuals or groups, or trying to break the site. We believe in the freedom of students to talk about what's going on, but we don't want our site used as a tool to hurt other people. Think "mutual respect" and you'll never have a problem.

Miscellaneous

Why blue?
You ask "why blue?" We asked "Why not blue?" It's worked out just fine.
What other schools have Jolts?
Ooh, that's a good one. You can view the full list by visiting www.dailyjolt.com/schools.
How does a school without a Jolt get one?
Bribes, primarily. Well, actually not. Schools that have yet to be officially Jolted just need a couple bold and brazen kids to step up and start one. They can go here: www.dailyjolt.com/jointhecause.
What is JoltCamps?
In a nutshell, it's a place for college students to find summer camp positions -- counseling, activity directing, skill teaching, etc. It grew out of the Job Board and is now a pretty big and useful site of its own, if we do say so ourselves.
What is Quad Riot?
In a seashell, it's a place for college students to find the most worthwhile procrastination on the web. Videos, games, interesting sites, articles, they all get submitted and voted on by the discriminating masses. Those that are deemed worthy of sharing make it to the top of the list and live on in the annals of procrastination history. Stuff that's not that great gets banish-ed forever quite rightly. Ah, democracy lives on somewhere.
Who's this Ron guy, anyway?
You wish you were cool enough to know him. There isn't a game system out there he hasn't conquered.
